Vincent Funel, Two Panels from the Choir of St. Maxime

1692
Woodwork
St. Maxime, Var, France

The panel on the left portrays St. Raymond's miraculous voyage from the island of Majorca, using his cloak as both a boat and a sail. Judging from the tower on the peninsula in the background, we are looking at his arrival in Barcelona.

The keys and wand at the bottom of the image are seen in other images of St. Raymond. Perhaps they refer to specific miracles he performed.

On the right, St. Vincent Ferrer preaches on a favorite theme of his, "Fear the Lord, and give him honour, because the hour of his judgment is come" (Revelation 14:7). Teaching this text, the saint points to the scene above him, where Christ sits in a sunburst on a rainbow, trumpets and lightning bolts issuing from the clouds beneath him. The rainbow and lightning are from Revelation 4:3-5; the trumpets, from Jesus' prophecy of the end times in Matthew 24:31. Trumpets and lightning bolts are also pictured in the section below the wreath.

Vincent Ferrer was also remembered as a worker of miraculous cures, especially of children. That may be the reason for the the woman who holds her child out toward the saint and for the two men kneeling at his feet.
